CCAA Women’s Soccer Rankings Week 2
Week number 2 in the CCAA Women’s soccer rankings bring some shifts that have upturned the rankings stating with this week’s newly crowned number #1 team the Garneau Élans defeating the defending National Champions Ahuntsic this past weekend 2-0 in RSEQ play.
The biggest drop in position came with the Humber Hawks sliding to number #8 in the rankings with their cross city rivals Seneca taking over the number #4 spot due in part to an early season tie with the number #13 ranked Redeemer Royals.
Head coach Stéphanie Frenette-Blais’ Élans after that win looked like the team to beat in the RSEQ and possibly the country until two days later when they came crashing back to earth with a 1-2 loss to Ch-St. Lambert. Ahuntsic currently sits in third in the RSEQ, but realisticly, they had to lose at some point with their win streak going back to 2021.
This result means that the RSEQ looks to be wide open this season with 5 points separating 1st and 6th place after the majority of the teams playing 4 games a piece. But given the record of the conference over the past few years and their overall dominance on the National scene, it is up to the other four conferences in the country to prove otherwise.
Out west, the number #2 ranked Capilano Blues maintained their hold on their spot and started to separate from the pack opening a 5 point lead in the PACWEST with a win over the Douglas Royals 2-1 and in the return match Douglas was held Capilano at bay in a tale of two halves on Sunday afternoon as the Blues and Royals played the second half of a weekend home-and-home.
The first half belonged to the Royals who came out flying scoring a pair of goals and looked to be off to the races, scoring in the 8th (Melisa Hvarcaya) and 22nd minutes (Isabelle Dobbin).
However, after halftime the tables turned and it was all Blues. They finally got on the board with a pair of goals when Maya Smith caught fire and scored in the 73rd minute to cut the score in half for Capilano and then again in the 78th to help keep the Blues unbeaten.
The season across the country is unfolding nicely.
Exciting times to come.
