OUA Announces Women’s and Men’s Soccer Schedules For The 2022 Season

Burlington, Ont. – The beautiful game is back on the pitch for a full 2022 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season slate, with the first action of the year getting underway on September 2, 2022.

After seeing the field grouped into three divisions a year ago, the conference makeup returns to an East and West Division split for the 2022 campaign. With no interlock, teams will complete their respective 12-game schedules within the confines of their division, leaving a number of tantalizing tilts for fans to circle on their calendars.

With a number of new first time head coaches in the ranks of the OUA this year, it looks to be an exciting time for the conference.

The opening day’s games include four apiece on the women’s and men’s side, as Carleton heads to Kingston to battle Queen’s, marking the first game in the Gaels women’s title defence; Brock travels north to play Algoma; and Windsor welcomes York, who are looking to remain among the perennial powers once again after a silver medal finish for the men in 2021. The remaining matchup will treat fans to a season-opening Battle of Waterloo, as Wilfrid Laurier and Waterloo will renew their rivalry right off the hop.

While the defending women’s champions will help kick off the season in the first half of their back-to-back, the reigning title holders on the men’s side will see their season start later that weekend, as the Guelph Gryphons hit the road to take on the Thunderbirds on September 4.

Both the Gryphons and the Lions will have a chance to get in a groove before taking the pitch for a championship rematch, as the most recent OUA victors will once again host the team they vanquished in last year’s finale in Week 4 (Sept. 23). With no interlock, there will be no such rematch on the women’s side, with the Gaels and silver medal winning Western Mustangs situated in separate divisions. The 2021 runners up, however, will begin their quest for a return to the championship game with a September 3 matchup against McMaster.

After seeing their strong 2021 campaigns cut short in the postseason, the Nipissing Lakers and Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s teams, both of whom topped their respective divisions in the regular season and were mainstays among the nation’s top-10 a year ago, will also be primed for play in 2022. The former will have to wait until Week 2 to step onto the field when they take on Laurentian on September 10, while the latter will be off and running on September 3 against the Varsity Blues, followed quickly by a tilt with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) the following the day.

The TMU men’s team, another of the country’s consistently ranked squads from a season ago, will get their first taste of regular season play on September 15 against Ontario Tech.

The final strokes on the regular season canvas will be added on October 23 when six games apiece close out the 10-week stretch and help usher in the postseason. Playoff action then kicks off on October 26, with the first round of play. The quarterfinals (Oct. 29) and semifinals (Nov. 2) will follow before the final two teams compete for their championships on November 5.
